about
For this project, my group made a video demonstrating the physics of volleyball. Considering that we all play volleyball for the Freshman/
J.V. teams, this project was not too difficult. This was a very fun project, because a good portion of it involved leaving class to go play volleyball
(and filming of course).
Physics:
Velocity of the Ball:
v=d/t v=5m/1.66s v=3.012m/s
Velocity of Arm:
v=d/t v=0.4m/0.1s v=4 m/s
Elastic Collision:
v=7.012m/s
Horizontal and Vertical Velocity of the Ball:
a^2+b^2=c^2 x^2+x^2=7.012m/s^2 x=4.95m/s
Height of the Ball:
d=1/2at^2 d=(9.8m/s^2)(1.66s)^2 d=13.5m
Work your arm does:
w=1/2mv^2 w=1/2(0.4026kg)(3.012m/s)^2 w=1.8262J
w=fm 1.8262J=5m(F) f=0.3652 N
Reflection:
Our video started out with the introduction of everyone in my group (Julia, Annabel, Lauren, and I) and basically just an
introduction of what our video was to be about. After this, we filmed each of us passing a volleyball to the best of our ability.
Then, we added a video of Lauren and I peppering, or passing setting and hitting back and forth, to demonstrate the pass in
more of a live situation. After the peppering, they filmed one of my team's games using time lapse while we talked about the
physics of the pass. We determined these physics after doing a lot of measuring of the body and the volleyball court. After
this part, they filmed my team warming up before a game, while I talked about what you have to do in order to pass
"perfectly". After saying goodbye, we concluded the video with random bloopers that happened while filming. We were
very happy to find a song for the video that sounded as perfect for the situation as the one that we chose, and we spent a
good deal of time obsessing over that. I think that I learned a lot from this project. Each group project that we do in stem
teaches me more and more about the people in my class. I develop group skills that will help me a lot in the future. Specifically
with this project, I learned a lot about what is actually happening when I am playing volleyball. I learned that there is much
more to the muscle memory passing that I have become so used to. I was so lucky to do this project with a group of people
who all play volleyball. It made creating the video much more fun, and they actually knew what they were talking about. I had
a very good time creating this video, and I was sad that it had to come to an end. I always felt this way after the last project,
so I know that the next project will be lots of fun as well.
